The biggest names in the world of golf descend on Royal Troon Golf Club in the west of Scotland for the 2024 Open Championship, which gets underway on Thursday, July 18 and runs through until Sunday, July 21. Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods will draw much of the attention, although any number of players from a star-studded field could realistically claim the Claret Jug.

158 players will start round one on Thursday, including 17 LIV golfers. US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and previous major winners Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka lead the way there, although a number of Open regulars miss out after leaving the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

2024 British Open picks: Scheffler, McIlroy, Morikawa, Finau

At the time of writing, the Open odds has Scheffler (who sat out the Scottish Open) leading as the favorite at +450. Trailing behind him are McIlroy at +750, PGA Champion Xander Schauffele at +1100, and DeChambeau, Ludwig Aberg and Collin Morikawa all at +1400.

Morikawa, who won The Open at Royal St George’s in 2021, has been tipped to do well by many after being in the hunt to win (without doing so) on several occasions in recent months.

Tony Finau (+4000) also looks to be a reasonable shout to contend as he searches for his first major win. The 34-year-old has finished in the top 10 in his last three events and his ball-striking versatility could be just what is required on a links course.

Outside bets for the 2024 Open

Of course, golf being golf, there is also a chance that someone less fancied could make a big impact. England’s Aaron Rai (+6000) has also posted three top 10s in a row on the PGA Tour and will hope to repeat the trick after tying for fourth at the Scottish Open to just sneak into The Open.

Outwith the obvious names, Sepp Straka, Alex Noren and Akshay Bhatia (all +10000) are outside bets to gatecrash the party at the top of the leaderboard.
