Rory McIlroy is one of a number of big names who will miss the cut at the 2024 British Open, after the world No. 2 endured a disastrous first round amid testing weather conditions at the Royal Troon Golf Club. Things aren’t going much better on Friday for McIlroy and he’s currently at 11-over par and will not be playing in Scotland this weekend.

Bidding to bounce back from his heartbreaking failure to win June’s US Open at Pinehurst, where he was pipped to the title by Bryson DeChambeau, McIlroy hit a seven-over round of 78 on Thursday. “The course was playing tough, the Northern Irishman said after his unsuccessful first day. “The conditions are very difficult in a wind that we haven’t seen so far this week.”
