Rory McIlroy Plans to Reduce Tournament Schedule
Rory McIlroy has announced his intention to “cut back” on his tournament schedule in the future, following a packed 2024 lineup that will see him compete in 27 events by the year’s end.
The 35-year-old pro made these comments after finishing with a closing score of 66, tying for ninth place at The Tour Championship in Atlanta.
The four-time major champion began the year with a strong performance, winning the Dubai Desert Classic. Among his notable achievements are victories at the Wells Fargo Championship in May and a second-place finish at the US Open in Pinehurst in June, despite a late-game collapse that allowed Bryson DeChambeau to secure the win. He also missed the cut at the Open Championship in Troon in July.
McIlroy represented Team Ireland, finishing joint fifth at the Olympics in Paris.
“It’s been a long season, and I’m going to have to consider building in a few extra breaks next year and moving forward,” McIlroy stated. “I felt like I hit a bit of a wall after the US Open and I’m still feeling the effects of that.”
Reflection on Tournament Participation
When asked how many tournaments he considers too many in a year, McIlroy answered, “27. I usually prefer around 22 events. However, that was back in my 20s when I didn’t have the responsibilities I have now.”
“I think I’ll aim to cut it back to around 18 or 20 tournaments a year going forward,” he added.
Currently ranked number three in the world, McIlroy still has several tournaments scheduled for the remainder of the year, including the Irish Open at Royal County Down next week and the Alfred Dunhill Links at St Andrews in October.
“My season isn’t over. I still have five events left to play,” he confirmed. “But yes, it feels like the tournaments came thick and fast, especially with the Olympics included this year, which condensed everything a bit.”
