Kevin Magnussen Suspended from Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Haas driver Kevin Magnussen will be suspended from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after exceeding the allowed number of penalty points in a calendar year.

The Danish driver received a 10-second penalty and two penalty points on his license for a collision with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly during the Italian Grand Prix. This incident pushed him to a total of 12 points within the year, triggering an automatic race ban as per the rules.

Haas has yet to announce who will replace Magnussen for the race in Baku, scheduled for September 13-15. Potential candidates include Briton Oliver Bearman, who has been signed for 2025, and current reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi.

Magnussen has expressed confusion over the decision to penalize him for the incident, which occurred when he crashed into the side of Gasly’s car at the second chicane.

“Gasly and I had slight contact, with no damage to either car. There were no consequences in the race; we simply made contact and missed the corner. So what? We were racing,” Magnussen stated before his ban was confirmed.

He continued, “I’ve spoken to the stewards numerous times, and I still don’t understand what the rules are. It seems to me that they don’t want racing. If my interaction with Gasly can’t be classified as a racing incident, then I don’t know what can be. It doesn’t make sense.”

Magnussen compared the incident to one involving his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, and RB’s Daniel Ricciardo, pointing out what he sees as inconsistencies in the stewards’ decisions.

“I don’t understand why we need to be handing out penalties like this. Additionally, I saw Nico nearly being thrown into the wall at 300 km/h by Ricciardo. I’m not saying it was intentional, but he received five seconds while I got 10 seconds. It doesn’t add up at all,” he said.
