Jack Doohan Set to Make Formula 1 Debut with Alpine in 2025

Australian Jack Doohan will make his Formula 1 debut with Alpine in 2025 after being promoted from his role as reserve driver.

The 21-year-old, son of five-time MotoGP champion Mick Doohan, will partner with Frenchman Pierre Gasly, who has been racing for Alpine since 2023.

Doohan replaces Esteban Ocon, who has moved to Haas following his split from Alpine.

Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes, who has occupied his role for less than a month, remarked: “Jack will become the first driver to graduate from the Alpine academy into a race driver position with the team, which is exceptionally pleasing for both the team and its young driver pathway.”

Oakes previously managed the HiTech team, where he ran Doohan in two Asian Formula 3 series in 2019.

“I personally worked with Jack back in 2019 and I am fully aware of his raw talent and potential,” Oakes noted. “He is a very hard worker behind the scenes, and his commitment is greatly valued by the entire team. Alongside Pierre, we have a well-balanced driver lineup that combines youthful energy, experience, and pure speed.”

Doohan described this announcement as “a proud day for my family.” He added: “I am very grateful for the trust and belief shown by the team’s senior management. There’s a lot of work ahead to be prepared and ready, and in the meantime, I will strive to absorb as much information and knowledge as possible to be ready for the step up.”

Alpine has been experiencing significant turmoil in senior management over the past year, with Oakes’ appointment being the latest example. He replaced Bruno Famin, who held the position for just a year after Otmar Szafnauer’s departure.

In this turbulent period, the team has also seen several key personnel either sacked or depart willingly.

Earlier this year, former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore was appointed as an executive adviser, and the 74-year-old Italian is effectively the power within the team.

Briatore has advised closing the Renault F1 engine program and transitioning the team to be a customer of Mercedes. However, this decision has yet to be officially confirmed.
